The next step after a decent welder, is to have a good soldering station but here things get complicated because the really good are usually quite expensive. Following that, Matthias has made his own homemade welding station based on Arduino also has a small LCD screen to display the current temperature. The box was printed in 3D and has made available all the files on Thingiverse in case you want to replicate. Also he made available on Github source code, although I missed there PID control for temperature, because it basically makes some simple comparisons to control the maximum and minimum level but is fully functional.
