According to a scientific study, the emoji are not perceived in the same way as the mobile platform used.
The Emojis are everywhere, sometimes to the point of totally replace the text in the text or on social networks. An invasion due to their ease of use, whether the user side or the side of the service providers as these are managed by the same Unicode protocol adapted by the marks according to the graphic style that they want to give their emoji.
But, while they were at the base created to bring the nuance that it is very difficult to put in the text and thus limit misunderstandings, it seems that the opposite occurs. The emoji would indeed be interpreted differently depending on the brand of smartphone use.
A study on the perception of emoji
The very serious study comes from a team of researchers from the University of Minnesota. They have sought to see if the language was emoji as universal as we think. They then conducted a survey of smartphone owners in the US seeking to vary the panel based on mobile OS used.
They then asked them to place the same emoji on a classification scale of one who exuded the most negative feeling one that exudes the most positive sense. Astonishment, interpretations differ widely depending on the platform used.
The emoji perceived differently depending on platform
For example, the smiley "smiling all the teeth out" is interpreted negatively by study participants when it appears on iOS while it liberates rather a positive sentiment on other platforms.
Overall, we see the following table that many emoji are a source of very different interpretations between platforms used.
Of course, this will not revolutionize our use emoji. However, marks, including their Community Managers, will have to think now twice before inserting a smiley in their posts. This could indeed be very misinterpreted!
